Arsenal have been in “direct contact” with the representatives of Brighton utility player Jack Hinshelwood, according to reports.
The Sun claim that the Gunners are the favourites to secure the 21-year-old’s signature, with manager Mikel Arteta a big fan of the player.
Hinshelwood is usually deployed as either a right-back or a holding midfielder, but he was utilised as a no.10 by Seagulls boss Fabian Hurzeler at the back end of last season.
Arteta is said to be an admirer of Hinshelwood’s versatility, with the Spaniard preferring to have players in his squad who can play multiple positions.
Of course, with Jurrien Timber currently sidelined with a groin injury, it is more than likely that Hinshelwood has been identified to reinforce the right-hand side of defence.
Arsenal will have competition for the player
It is believed that both Manchester City and Manchester United have also explored a move for the England Under-21 international.
Out of the two clubs, The Sun report that the Red Devils are the likeliest to make a formal bid, having made “official inquiries” about Hinshelwood very recently.
The Gunners may, therefore, have to move fast if they do want to win the battle for his signature before the transfer window shuts.
What is Hinshelwood’s asking price?
A fee between €50m (£43m) and €60m (£51m) is said to be the ballpark that the Premier League champions will have to reach.
That would make him slightly cheaper than Ezri Konsa, who is valued at £60m by Aston Villa, but the 28-year-old has the added benefit of being a centre-half too, which is a position that the club are also looking to strengthen, with William Saliba on the sidelines.
Deals for Atletico Madrid’s Marc Pubill and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah have also been explored over the past few days.
